The U.S. main transportation safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), announced on Friday that it is seeking more information from Tesla about a new, more aggressive driver assistance mode dubbed “Mad Max”. The investigation comes after reports and social media posts from drivers indicated that vehicles using this new version of the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system could operate above posted speed limits. The NHTSA stated it is in contact with Tesla to gather additional information, reminding the public that the human driver is fully responsible for complying with all traffic laws. This inquiry adds to the existing scrutiny on Tesla's autonomous driving technology, as the agency had previously opened a broader investigation into Tesla's FSD system due to dozens of reports of traffic-safety violations and crashes.
