Tesla has canceled plans to sell the Cybertruck in Australia and New Zealand, ending a nearly seven-year wait for customers who placed deposits after the vehicle’s 2019 unveiling. The company said in an email to reservation holders that it would not produce a right-hand-drive version and would refund their $150 deposits in full.
The decision affects tens of thousands of customers and follows years of speculation about whether the Cybertruck’s design could meet Australia’s strict regulations. Tesla is offering affected reservation holders a complimentary one-year subscription to its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software if they buy a new Model 3 or Model Y.
The Cybertruck has been removed from Tesla’s Australian website.
