The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a preliminary investigation into approximately 115,000 Rivian R1S and R1T vehicles. This probe covers model years 2022 through 2025.

Two owner complaints allege that the rear toe link separated while driving. These failures caused vehicles to swerve and resulted in one reported crash.

Federal regulators will assess the durability of the rear toe link. The inquiry also reviews Rivian’s existing repair procedures for the component.

Rivian previously recalled nearly 20,000 R1 vehicles for improperly assembled toe-link bolts. This recall occurred in January 2026. The company maintains that its internal reviews show the components are operating as intended.
