Alphabet’s Google and Voltus expanded their agreement to build a 1-gigawatt (GW) virtual power plant (VPP) in the PJM grid region. The expansion adds 1,070 megawatts (MW) of capacity—roughly ten times the 100 MW covered by the initial deal, signed in June 2026. The expanded portfolio is among the largest known distributed capacity portfolios deployed by a hyperscaler.
The VPP aggregates flexible energy capacity from local businesses and households. When the grid is under strain, Voltus asks participants to reduce their energy use through resources such as batteries and smart thermostats.
The initiative is intended to strengthen grid reliability and provide direct financial benefits to participating customers, linking Google’s capacity needs with economic opportunities for local communities.
