Starting in early 2027, Google will turn off AI tools by default for K-12 student accounts. School administrators will have to opt in to enable them.
Schools that choose to block the AI features entirely will also lose students’ access to Google Search. Google executives say AI is now “deeply integrated” into the search engine, making the two inseparable.
The policy puts school districts in a difficult position. Many rely on Google’s Chromebooks and education software but have concerns about AI’s impact on learning.
The move comes as Google introduces new Guided Learning AI features designed to coach students rather than provide direct answers.
