Google signs 22-year Finland nuclear deal, its first outside the U.S.

Alphabet’s Google entered a 22-year strategic partnership with Finnish utility Fortum Oyj to purchase nuclear power. This agreement represents Google’s first nuclear energy deal located outside the United States. The partnership secures carbon-free electricity for Google’s expanding data center and AI infrastructure in Finland.

The agreement supports extending the operational life of the Loviisa nuclear power plant until 2050. This facility currently provides approximately 10% of Finland’s total electricity supply. The deal provides Fortum with the revenue certainty required for its €1 billion plant upgrade program.

Google will begin offtaking up to 50% of the plant’s capacity starting in 2028. This power commitment remains in effect through 2049. The move aligns with Google’s broader €13 billion investment in Finland’s digital infrastructure.
