The sixth GE F404-IN20 engine delivered to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for India's Tejas Mk1A fighter jet program failed acceptance parameters during inspection. This setback adds to existing program delays. The program runs over two years behind schedule. This may impact deliveries to the Indian Air Force. HAL formally requested technical assistance from GE. A team will inspect the engine to determine if it can be repaired in India or requires replacement.

The engine issue stems from a 2021 contract for 99 F404 engines for the Tejas Mk1A fleet. Separately, GE is negotiating for its more powerful F414 engines for India's next-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Those talks have encountered a roadblock. Reports indicate GE sought a steep price increase. This nearly triples the initially estimated cost per engine.
