Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued Enbridge a formal notice alleging seven violations of state environmental laws and permits for its Line 5 pipeline reroute project. The alleged violations involve water quality, wetlands, air quality, and endangered resources protections.
The notice covers the 41-mile segment under construction in Ashland and Iron counties.
The action follows several recent incidents at the project site, including an August gas leak and multiple fires that destroyed equipment. The DNR is investigating those incidents separately.
The DNR and Enbridge are scheduled to hold an enforcement conference on October 26. The agency may refer the alleged violations to the Wisconsin Department of Justice for further action.
