BMW is recalling 27,720 vehicles in the U.S. due to a drivetrain defect. This issue may cause a sudden loss of power or lead to a vehicle rollaway.
Excessive wear in the connection between the driveshaft and rear differential increases the risk of a crash. BMW stated it is currently unaware of any accidents or injuries linked to the problem.
The recall affects specific 5 Series, 7 Series, and 8 Series models manufactured between 2021 and 2026. Dealers will inspect the connection and either apply an adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear differential at no cost. BMW plans to notify affected owners by mail starting October 2.
