Amazon CEO Andy Jassy informed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that Amazon researchers successfully jailbroke Anthropic’s Fable 5 AI model. The researchers extracted sensitive information capable of facilitating cyberattacks.

The Commerce Department issued an export control directive on June 12 following this disclosure. The mandate bans all foreign nationals from accessing Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models.

Anthropic disabled both models globally just three days after the Fable 5 launch. The company characterized the government’s regulatory response as disproportionate.

Amazon has invested approximately $13 billion in the AI startup. Anthropic currently maintains a $100 billion infrastructure spending commitment with AWS.

The service disruption complicates Anthropic’s expected 2026 initial public offering. This development creates a market gap that Amazon’s own AI division could potentially fill.
