FOIA records reveal Amazon’s extensive control over third-party delivery drivers classified as independent contractors. The company dictates specific delivery routes and vehicle maintenance vendors. Internal policies even mandate standards for personal hygiene and nail length.
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is moving to settle a landmark case regarding Amazon’s status as a joint employer. A former Amazon lawyer appointed to lead the agency advanced the settlement. This agreement allows Amazon to pay terminated drivers without being formally recognized as their employer.
The Teamsters union is currently appealing the settlement. The records were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request during the ongoing NLRB proceedings.
