The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) closed its criminal investigation into Abbott Laboratories’ infant formula plant in Sturgis, Michigan. The probe followed a 2022 recall and facility shutdown triggered by bacterial contamination concerns. This shutdown significantly contributed to a nationwide baby formula shortage.
Federal officials will pursue civil penalties instead of criminal charges. While some prosecutors reportedly found sufficient evidence for a criminal case, senior DOJ officials decided against the move.
Abbott maintains that its products have no direct link to reported infant illnesses. The conclusion of the criminal investigation removes a significant legal overhang for the company.
