India’s IT ministry withdrew a proposal requiring manufacturers like Apple and Samsung to pre-install the Aadhaar biometric ID app. The government scrapped the mandate following consultations with industry stakeholders.
Tech giants opposed the January proposal over concerns regarding security, production costs, and manufacturing complexities. This marks the sixth time in two years that the industry blocked government attempts to mandate state-app installations.
A previous mandate for a telecom app was also withdrawn following similar industry pushback.
