XRP ETF Jumps 3.2% on a Crypto Rebound, but Can Institutional Inflows Outpace Ripple's Billion-Token Monthly Supply Drip?
Shares of the Bitwise XRP ETF climbed 3.2% to $15.48 in pre-market trading on September 3, snapping a five-session slide that had dragged the fund from $16.31 to $15.00. The bounce tracks a broader digital-asset recovery — Bitcoin gained 0.79% overnight — but investors face a fundamental tension: growing ETF demand on one side and a predictable river of new supply on the other.
ETF Money Is Pouring In, but the Fund Is Still Underwater on Its Cost Basis
The Bitwise XRP ETF has crossed $500 million in assets under management just nine months after launch.
U.S. spot XRP ETFs collectively attracted $110.49 million in weekly inflows, pushing cumulative inflows to roughly $1.79 billion. Yet the fund's own filings tell a sobering story: as of June 30, the ETF held about 287 million XRP tokens carried at a cost of $480 million but valued at just $299 million — a 37.7% unrealized loss. Today's bounce helps but barely dents that gap.
Ripple's Monthly Token Unlock Creates a Permanent Supply Headwind
Ripple released 1 billion XRP on September 1 through three escrow transactions of 500 million, 400 million, and 100 million tokens.
The release cut Ripple's escrow balance from about 32.28 billion to 31.28 billion XRP. Crucially, Ripple typically returns 600–800 million XRP to new escrow contracts, meaning only 200–400 million actually enter circulation each month. That's still potentially $300–550 million in fresh supply at current prices — roughly the equivalent of three weeks of total U.S. XRP ETF inflows.
A Seasonal Warning Sign Lurks Behind the Rally
In seven of the last eight years, XRP's September has moved opposite to August. Both times August rose, September fell — losing 14% in 2020 and 19.6% in 2021.
XRP surged 37% in August , its best month of 2026, raising the odds that history rhymes again.
The Bottom Line for Shareholders The ETF gives retail and institutional investors regulated access to XRP without handling wallets, but it cannot shield them from the asset's core math problem. Whether the recent rally marks a genuine inflection depends on whether ETF absorption outpaces Ripple's escrow releases — a race the buy side has yet to convincingly win.
