United Therapeutics opened its third Designated Pathogen-Free (DPF) xenograft production facility in Houston, Texas. The site will manufacture xenokidneys and xenohearts for the company’s organ manufacturing program. It is intended to support commercial-scale production, pending regulatory approval of the products now in clinical trials.
Named for xenotransplantation pioneers Dr. Bartley P. Griffith and Dr. Robert A. Montgomery, the facility joins two others in Virginia and Minnesota. The expansion increases the company’s capacity to produce genetically engineered organs for patients with end-stage organ failure. United Therapeutics is conducting clinical trials of its UKidney, UThymoKidney, and UHeart products.
