Shares of Turkey's largest confectionery maker jumped +6.83% to TRY 97.75 on August 20 after second-quarter earnings revealed a paradox: revenue declined 11.4% to TRY 27.0 billion , yet net income surged 45.5% to TRY 1.4 billion — roughly six times the TRY 225 million analyst consensus. For shareholders, the question is whether this bottom-line windfall reflects sustainable improvement or a one-time financial engineering story.

  • Profits Came From Below the Operating Line, Not From Selling More Snacks

Gross margin narrowed by 260 basis points and EBITDA margin dropped to 7.4% from 14.6%, reflecting significant pressure from cocoa costs, inflation accounting effects, and heavy promotions. The profit beat didn't come from the core business — management credited favorable foreign exchange movements and lower interest expense after refinancing. In plain terms, Ülker's snack operation got worse, but its balance sheet bailed it out. That distinction matters because currency gains can reverse quickly.

  • Volume Held Up, but Revenue Guidance Got Worse

Consolidated volumes rose 1.3% year-over-year to 163,447 tons in what the CEO described as "one of the most promotional quarters" in Turkey. Consumers are still buying, but at lower prices. Ülker revised its 2026 net sales outlook to a low single-digit decline from flat, citing higher inflation assumptions and geopolitical uncertainty.

At the same time, it kept EBITDA margin guidance unchanged at 13.5% ± 1.5 percentage points — a promise the market is choosing to trust for now.

  • Cocoa Relief Could Arrive, but Timing Remains Uncertain

Management said it expects the second half to benefit from better cocoa pricing as inventory turns over, although the effect will not be immediate.

Cocoa futures currently hover near $5,700 per tonne , well below the $12,000+ peaks of late 2024, but El Niño risks prompted StoneX to slash its 2026/27 surplus estimate to just 25,000 MT from 149,000 MT. A renewed cocoa spike would erase Ülker's margin recovery thesis.

  • Analysts Still See Deep Upside — If the Business Stabilizes

Nine analysts carry a "Buy" rating with a 12-month price target of TRY 173.76 , implying nearly 90% upside from today's price. That gap reflects both opportunity and skepticism: the stock trades at roughly 11.8x trailing earnings, cheap for a market leader, yet ULKER has badly lagged the BIST 100 index over the past year.

The bottom line: investors rewarded Ülker for surviving a brutal quarter, not for thriving in one. The real test comes when financial tailwinds fade and the snack business must carry the numbers on its own.
