Uber and Wayve's planned rollout of self-driving robotaxis in London is unlikely to happen in 2026. The companies cite a lack of regulatory and technical guidance. Over 100,000 Londoners are on a waiting list for the service. The launch is now postponed indefinitely.

The initial phase required a licensed private hire driver in the driver's seat. This driver would ensure safety and intervene as needed, with the vehicle's software in control. Planned commercial pilots, anticipated to start later in the summer, will still feature a safety driver upon launch.
