Republican lawmakers are urging the International Trade Commission (ITC) to ban Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) chip imports. The proposed ban would take effect if the company is found to have infringed on U.S. patents.

Longitude Licensing and Marlin Semiconductor filed the underlying patent infringement allegations. Lawmakers argue that enforcing U.S. patent rights is essential for protecting domestic intellectual property. The dispute threatens cross-border supply chains and TSMC’s existing business relationships within the United States.

An administrative law judge expects to issue a preliminary ruling in June 2026. The commission could reach a final decision by October 2026. Taiwan’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Kung Ming-hsin, maintains confidence in TSMC’s compliance with all patent regulations.
