AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon have officially formed a joint venture to address wireless coverage gaps across the United States. The venture will expand satellite-enabled, direct-to-device connectivity in underserved and remote areas where traditional cell service is limited.

The move follows an agreement in principle reached in May to pool spectrum resources and create a unified platform for satellite integration. The venture will complement the companies’ terrestrial networks, while allowing their existing carrier-satellite agreements to remain in place.

Wireless industry veteran Paul Roth has been appointed interim CEO as the venture searches for a permanent leader. A board with representatives from each carrier will manage the venture, which aims to improve network resiliency, particularly during emergencies, and accelerate innovation in satellite-based communications.
