Spotify is enforcing its household requirement for Premium Family plans with a new QR code verification system. Some members are being asked to scan a dynamic code in person to prove they live with the plan manager. The code changes every few seconds, preventing members from verifying with a screenshot.
Members who do not complete the scan within seven days of being notified will be removed from the plan and blocked from joining any Family or Duo plan for one year.
The move is widely seen as a crackdown on subscribers sharing plans with people outside their household, a practice streaming services are increasingly targeting to boost revenue. A recent Goldman Sachs report noted that services could capture more value by tightening eligibility for multi-user plans.
