Sony Interactive Entertainment will discontinue physical game disc production for all new first- and third-party PlayStation games starting January 2028. The company attributes this move to consumer preferences for digital media significantly outpacing physical discs. Digital downloads currently account for the vast majority of game sales on its platforms.

New games released after the deadline will be available only via the PlayStation Store or as digital codes at retail locations. This change does not affect games released on disc prior to January 2028. Existing physical games will continue to function on supported hardware.

The strategy accelerates an industry-wide transition away from physical media. This shift creates significant implications for traditional retailers and competitors such as Microsoft’s Xbox.
