Sony leads Japanese giants to launch Noetra, targeting sovereign physical AI

Sony Group, SoftBank, NEC, and Honda Motor have launched Noetra Corp. to develop a sovereign Japanese artificial intelligence. The consortium has commenced full-scale research and development of a multimodal foundation model.

The project focuses on physical AI to power robotics and real-world industrial applications. This strategy leverages Japan's manufacturing strengths to address labor shortages and enhance global competitiveness.

Backed by significant government funding, Noetra aims to reduce reliance on technology from the U.S. and China. The entity represents a national effort to establish Japan as a leader in next-generation AI development.
