SanDisk faces new competition, China's CXMT starts HBM3E production

China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) began small-scale production of HBM3E chips on September 1, 2026. This advanced memory technology is essential for artificial intelligence accelerators.

Alibaba’s T-Head and AI-chip designer Cambricon are currently testing the new chips. These firms could integrate the technology into products as early as 2027.

The development creates long-term pressure for primary suppliers SanDisk, Micron, and SK Hynix. While CXMT faces low yields and lags behind leaders by several years, the move signals China’s progress in the semiconductor sector.
