Shares of Steven Madden (SHOO) plunged 11.4% to $41.62 on November 5 after third-quarter results revealed a gap between the company's improving fundamentals and the market's lofty expectations. The selloff erased a 6.7% pre-earnings rally from the prior session, signaling that traders had priced in a beat that never fully materialized.
• The Revenue Shortfall Was Narrow but Costly. Revenue came in at $772.6 million, up 15.7% year over year but short of some analyst estimates near $777.5 million.
S&P consensus pegged the target closer to $774.6 million, making the miss roughly $2 million — essentially a rounding error. Yet for a stock that had rallied into earnings, even a slight top-line disappointment was enough to trigger profit-taking. Management attributed the shortfall to wholesale shipments that slipped from Q3 into Q4, caused by typhoons in Asia and late deliveries — a timing issue, not a demand problem.
• Profits Surged, but the Full-Year Outlook Underwhelmed. Net income more than doubled to $52.4 million ($0.72/share), while adjusted EPS rose 84% to $0.79 from $0.43 a year ago.
That adjusted figure beat analysts' estimates by 5.1%. The problem: the company raised its full-year adjusted EPS guidance to $2.15–$2.20, up from $2.05–$2.15, but the $2.175 midpoint sits just below the cited $2.19 consensus. Investors read the guidance bump as insufficiently aggressive given the Q3 momentum.
• Margins Are Improving, but Tariff Clouds Linger. Gross margin expanded to 44.6% from 41.5% a year ago , and adjusted operating income nearly doubled to $78.9 million, or 10.2% of revenue.
However, while the Supreme Court's 2026 ruling eliminating certain emergency tariffs helped margins, new tariffs under other trade statutes have "partially offset" those benefits.
Higher freight costs also weighed on direct-to-consumer profitability.
• The Valuation Question Is Now Front and Center. At $41.62, the stock trades at roughly 19× the midpoint of raised adjusted EPS guidance — modest for a company delivering double-digit revenue growth and widening margins. Analysts maintain a consensus price target of $52.30 , implying ~26% upside. But with free cash flow negative at -$10.94 million in Q3, investors need to see that earnings strength convert to cash before rewarding the stock further.
