Federal prosecutors subpoenaed Reddit to appear before a Washington, D.C. grand jury. The government seeks personal data for an anonymous user who criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This move follows a withdrawn administrative summons previously issued by ICE. The agency retracted that initial request after a legal challenge in a Northern California federal court.

Civil liberties advocates characterize the grand jury involvement as a significant escalation. Legal counsel argues the First Amendment protects the user's right to anonymous online speech.

Reddit must provide the requested user data by April 14, 2026.
