The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will launch the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge pilot program on July 1, 2026. This initiative marks the first time Medicare will cover popular GLP-1 weight-loss medications. The program provides access to drugs including Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy for eligible beneficiaries.
Beneficiaries will pay a capped monthly co-pay of $50. The demonstration program runs through the end of 2027. This initiative temporarily bypasses federal laws that prohibit Medicare from covering weight-loss treatments.
The expansion targets millions of seniors and younger individuals with disabilities. Patients must meet specific criteria, including a high body mass index (BMI). All prescriptions require prior authorization.
Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly serve as the initial suppliers under the new plan. The move is expected to trigger a surge in prescriptions for both pharmaceutical companies.
