The FDA approved Novavax’s updated protein-based COVID-19 vaccine for the 2026-2027 immunization season. The shot provides a non-mRNA alternative to vaccines produced by competitors Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

The newly authorized vaccine targets the dominant XFG variant. Novavax’s partner, Sanofi, will lead the commercialization of the vaccine in the United States.

The approval specifically covers high-risk populations and older adults. These individuals face the greatest risk of severe outcomes from the virus.
