Nutrien Ltd. will permanently close its nitrogen operations at the Point Lisas facility in Trinidad because it could not secure a reliable, economical long-term supply of natural gas.
A controlled shutdown began nearly a year ago, on October 23, 2025, amid gas constraints and a dispute over port access. Nutrien said permanent closure is the best path to improve free cash flow and return on invested capital.
The facility previously produced about 85,000 metric tons of ammonia per month. It also produced about 55,000 metric tons of urea per month.
The closure will not affect Nutrien’s 2026 nitrogen sales volume guidance because the forecast did not include Trinidad production. The company plans to meet customer demand through its North American production assets.
