Novo Nordisk has commenced a new late-stage study to evaluate the efficacy of smaller doses of its highly successful weight-loss drug, Wegovy. The trial, which began on August 12 across 62 locations in the U.S. and Europe, will test different lower doses of the oral version of semaglutide against a placebo in 450 participants who are obese or overweight. The primary goal is to determine the percentage change in body weight after 60 weeks.
The study aims to identify a lower maintenance dose that could offer doctors more flexibility and improve tolerability for patients. This development occurs as Novo Nordisk faces intensified competition from Eli Lilly in the obesity drug market, which is projected to potentially exceed $100 billion in annual sales by 2030. The trial is expected to conclude in April 2028. Ahead of the market open, Novo Nordisk shares showed a slight decline of 0.6%.
