A labor union at Micron Technology’s Taoyuan plant in Taiwan launched a 24-hour strike on Thursday, the first-ever strike in the island’s semiconductor industry. The union is seeking a permanent, transparent profit-sharing system similar to those at competitors Samsung and SK Hynix.
The Taoyuan union planned the walkout to pressure Micron during separate negotiations with another union. As the strike proceeded, Micron reached an agreement with the union at its larger Taichung facility, averting a wider work stoppage.
The Taoyuan union said the strike was a warning to management as it continued to seek a concrete proposal on profit distribution. Taiwan is a key manufacturing hub for Micron, accounting for a significant portion of its global memory chip production.
