OpenAI reportedly agreed to pay chip startup Cerebras more than $20 billion over the next three years for server access. This figure doubles a previously reported $10 billion agreement between the two companies.
The partnership aims to diversify OpenAI's hardware supply chain and reduce its reliance on market leader Nvidia. OpenAI may also receive an equity stake in Cerebras in the form of warrants.
This arrangement gives OpenAI a vested interest in the success of alternative chip architectures. The move underscores the massive computing resources required to train and operate advanced AI models.
