OpenAI CEO Sam Altman issued a formal apology to the community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The apology addresses the company’s failure to alert law enforcement about a suspect in a February mass shooting.

The tragedy resulted in the deaths of eight people. Altman expressed regret that OpenAI did not notify authorities after banning the shooter’s ChatGPT account in June 2025.

The company identified threatening content on the account eight months before the shooting. OpenAI determined the activity did not meet its threshold for police notification at that time.

A victim’s family has filed a lawsuit against the company. Canadian officials are now demanding stricter safety protocols and considering new regulations for AI firms.
