Meta Platforms launched Petal, the first subsea cable system delivering petabit-per-second capacity across the Atlantic Ocean. The 7,000-kilometer cable connects the United States and France. Meta expects the infrastructure to be operational by 2029.
The system carries twice the capacity of current best-in-class transoceanic cables. This investment addresses rising data transmission demands from Meta’s ecosystem of applications and services. Subsea cables currently facilitate approximately 99% of all intercontinental internet traffic.
Meta is partnering with NEC and Sumitomo Electric Industries to develop the project. Orange will support the cable's landing on the Atlantic coast of France.
