The European Commission is intensifying its investigation into Meta Platforms under the Digital Services Act. Regulators allege that Facebook and Instagram utilize addictive designs that are harmful to children.

The probe examines whether platform features exploit the inexperience of minors through a rabbit-hole effect. This escalation marks a formal step in an investigation originally opened in May 2024.

Officials are specifically reviewing inadequate age verification and algorithmic systems that stimulate behavioral addiction. Meta faces potential fines of up to 6% of its global annual revenue if findings confirm these breaches.
