The European Union unveiled an open-source application to standardize age verification across online platforms. This initiative operates under the Digital Services Act (DSA) to shield minors from harmful and illegal content.
Users must confirm their age using a legal identification document, such as a passport, during the initial setup. The privacy-preserving system allows users to verify age requirements without sharing specific personal data with digital platforms.
The application serves as a bridge until the mandatory EU Digital Identity Wallet launches in 2026. Member states can adapt the open-source code to meet specific national legal requirements.
France and Spain are currently preparing to test and integrate the system. The tool remains functional as a standalone application despite its role as a temporary solution.
