Eli Lilly reported positive results from two Phase 3 sub-studies suggesting its next-generation obesity drug, retatrutide, may help treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in people with obesity. The sub-studies were part of the TRIUMPH-1 and TRIUMPH-2 trials, which have already shown that the drug helps patients lose weight.
The primary endpoint was change in the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), which measures breathing interruptions during sleep. Patients receiving weekly retatrutide injections had significant reductions in AHI.
Lilly is expected to seek a label expansion for retatrutide. The drug is anticipated to launch for obesity next year.
Eli Lilly shares have recently hit new all-time highs, amid investor confidence in the company’s diabetes and obesity treatments. Retatrutide’s potential use for sleep apnea could further strengthen Lilly’s pipeline and market position.
