IMAX Corp. plans to expand its theater count in Japan from just over 60 to 150. CEO Richard Gelfond outlined the goal in an interview published November 2, 2026.
Gelfond cited the strength of Japan’s film market, where local movies perform well, as a key reason for the expansion. He also said IMAX could eventually be used to show sports, potentially attracting larger audiences and broadening its offerings beyond Hollywood and local films.
