Ofcom launched a wide-ranging review to prepare for its expanded role overseeing Big Tech under the Online Safety Act (OSA). Chair Ian Cheshire expects the assessment of the regulator's structure and operating model to conclude this autumn.
Cheshire noted that Ofcom likely requires additional resources to manage a workload that has nearly doubled. The OSA grants the watchdog extensive powers over social media platforms to enforce compliance.
The reorganization aims to equip the regulator to monitor global tech companies. Key focus areas include removing illegal online material and protecting children from harmful content.
