Alphabet’s Google has secured the power agreements needed to move forward with a $17 billion data center project in Wyoming. The investment will expand its infrastructure for growing demand from AI and cloud computing.

The project advances amid concerns that tighter regulation could restrict future data center construction. Analysts say limits on new projects could make existing computing capacity scarcer and more valuable, benefiting Google, Microsoft and Amazon, which already operate substantial data center capacity.

A slowdown in construction could also reduce capital spending pressure on the cloud companies and potentially improve their free cash flow.
