General Motors is centering its affordable electric vehicle strategy on the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center in Warren, Michigan. The facility transitions advanced battery technologies from research to large-scale manufacturing. This hub supports GM’s goals to lower EV costs and increase driving range.
The center develops next-generation chemistries like lithium manganese-rich (LMR) cells. These batteries reduce reliance on expensive materials such as cobalt.
GM aims to become the first automaker to deploy LMR technology. The company plans to start commercial U.S. production through a joint venture by 2028. This initiative targets a significant reduction in total battery pack costs.
