General Motors confirmed it will bring hybrid vehicles back to its U.S. lineup, shifting from a strategy focused almost exclusively on all-electric vehicles. The decision follows slower EV sales growth and rising consumer demand for hybrids amid elevated gas prices. Mike Anderson, GM’s vice president of propulsion engineering, said the company is not “tone deaf to our customers” and wants to deliver what they want quickly.

The move reverses GM’s course after it discontinued its last mainstream plug-in hybrid, the Chevrolet Volt, in 2019. The company still aims for an all-electric future, but executives view hybrids as a transitional technology.

Forecasts suggest GM could begin offering plug-in hybrids in popular models such as the Equinox and Silverado in late 2027 or early 2028. The vehicles could help GM meet federal emissions regulations while responding to current market demand.
