Australian manganese producer Element 25 is reviewing plans to build a battery-grade manganese sulphate plant in Louisiana.

The company is renegotiating offtake agreements with General Motors and Stellantis. Project schedule delays prevented Element 25 from meeting original delivery timelines.

Evolving electric vehicle demand and battery chemistries prompted the project review.

General Motors partially funded the Louisiana facility with an $85 million loan. The plant would be the first of its kind in the U.S. and supports GM's strategy to onshore its electric vehicle battery supply chain.

The review and negotiations could impact GM's material sourcing timelines and costs.
