T-Mobile officially deactivated its 2G GSM network on August 3, 2026. This move makes T-Mobile the final major U.S. carrier to retire the legacy technology. AT&T previously shut down its 2G service in 2017, followed by Verizon in 2020.
The industry-wide transition prioritizes newer, more efficient networks like 5G. T-Mobile maintained its 2G service longer than rivals to support legacy devices and IoT applications. The network also provided connectivity for international visitors during the extended transition period.
T-Mobile expects the shutdown to affect a very small number of customers. The company has issued notifications to remaining 2G users regarding necessary hardware upgrades to maintain connectivity.
