Japan’s 10-year government bond yield climbed past the 3.00% threshold, marking a level not seen in nearly three decades. This milestone represents the first time the benchmark rate has reached this height since 1996.

The surge in yields occurred shortly after reports surfaced regarding discussions between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Japanese authorities. During these talks, Bessent reportedly advised officials in Japan that further interest rate increases are necessary for the nation's economy.
