Equinor said Thursday that its Afrodite gas discovery in the Norwegian North Sea contains more than twice the previously estimated recoverable volumes. After drilling a new appraisal well, the company estimated recoverable gas and condensate at 77 million to 180 million barrels of oil equivalent.
The discovery lies near the Kvitebjørn and Gullfaks fields in a mature area of the North Sea. Equinor considers the find commercially viable and is exploring a potential subsea development tied back to the existing Kvitebjørn platform.
The tieback could enable faster development by using existing infrastructure to process the gas and transport it to the European market.
