Shares of ams-OSRAM jumped 7.4% to €20.40 as the company kicked off Automechanika Frankfurt, the world's largest automotive aftermarket trade show, with a wave of new product launches aimed squarely at the car-repair and upgrade market. The rally snaps a four-day slide that had taken the stock from €19.10 to €19.00, but investors should weigh how much of this pop is substance versus showroom sparkle.
The Products Sound Small, but the Market Is Growing Fast. ams-OSRAM unveiled new road-approved LED retrofit headlight bulbs designed for quick, plug-and-play installation, including a warm-white variant targeting classic-car enthusiasts.
The company also launched windshield wiper blades and demonstrated live installation of its flagship LED upgrade. These are low-ticket items, but they sit in a sweet spot: the global automotive LED headlight aftermarket was valued at $10 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow at an 11.8% annual rate through 2035.
Aftermarket unit growth of 12–15% is expected to outpace OEM growth of 6–8%.
The Core Business Is Already Delivering — but Still Bleeding Cash. ams-OSRAM reported Q2 2026 revenue of €805 million, topping expectations.
Its semiconductor core grew 13% year-over-year, fueled by automotive strength. Yet the net loss for H1 2026 widened to €276 million, up from €81 million a year earlier , and full-year free cash flow is expected to remain around negative €300 million excluding asset sales. Selling more LED bulbs helps margins at the edges but won't close that gap alone.
Aftermarket Share Gains Give the Story a Defensive Floor. Management said its traditional automotive aftermarket business is gaining share thanks to competitor disruption.
The lamps-and-systems unit is also expected to benefit from its usual seasonal recovery in Q3.
LED retrofits cut energy use by up to 80% versus halogen , a selling point as fleet operators watch costs. Still, lamps and accessories are a smaller, lower-margin segment within a €3.3 billion revenue base — the company's full-year 2025 figure.
The Bottom Line for Shareholders. Today's rally signals enthusiasm, but the Automechanika showcase is a product-marketing event, not an earnings revision. Management reaffirmed full-year guidance calling for slightly lower revenue due to divestitures and currency headwinds. The aftermarket push is strategically sound — more recurring, higher-margin replacement revenue — but the real test remains whether ams-OSRAM can turn semiconductor design wins into positive free cash flow by 2027, as promised.
