Dell Technologies Inc. CEO Michael Dell stated that technology companies lack the authority to dictate how sovereign governments employ their tools. His comments follow a public dispute between AI startup Anthropic and the U.S. government.

The conflict began when Anthropic refused to remove ethical safeguards preventing its AI from being used for mass domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. The U.S. government designated Anthropic a supply chain risk in late February 2026.

Federal agencies received directives to terminate the use of Anthropic technology following the designation. Anthropic responded by filing a lawsuit against the Pentagon. Dell’s stance underscores a philosophical divide regarding the responsibilities of technology suppliers to military entities.
