Under new CEO Greg Abel, Berkshire Hathaway repurchased about $4.8 billion of its own shares in the first half of 2026. The move marked a more active capital deployment strategy after buybacks remained dormant through 2025.
Most of the repurchases came in the second quarter, when Berkshire bought about $4.5 billion of its shares. That compared with $235 million in the first quarter.
The accelerated buybacks coincided with Berkshire becoming a net buyer of stocks for the first time in 14 quarters. The shift indicates that Abel is deploying the company’s substantial cash holdings more actively.
