Chinese AI startup Zhipu AI (Z.ai) reached $1 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) in July 2026. This achievement marks the first time an independent Chinese AI firm has reached this milestone. The company surpassed its full-year sales targets early, indicating a rapid ramp-up in enterprise model commercialization.
The startup’s ARR surged 15-fold during the first six months of 2026. Zhipu AI grew from $100 million to $1 billion in ARR in just five months. This trajectory outpaces Western rival Anthropic, which took 15 months to reach the same figure.
Growth stems largely from on-premise deployments for Chinese state-owned enterprises. A fast-growing cloud and API business, particularly in AI for coding, also contributed to the record revenue.
