Moonshot AI launched its Kimi K3 model on July 16, 2026. The model contains 2.8 trillion parameters, making it the world's largest open-source AI model.

The Alibaba-backed firm designed Kimi K3 to compete directly with OpenAI’s GPT series and Anthropic’s Claude series. The model features a 1-million-token context window. It also includes native visual understanding capabilities.

Moonshot will release the model weights to allow developers to download and modify the system. This launch signals a narrowing technology gap between Chinese and U.S. AI sectors.

Early benchmarks show Kimi K3 exceeds rivals in specific coding and agentic tasks. However, the model trails OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic’s Fable 5 in general intelligence benchmarks.
